The Driver is responsible for providing safe, reliable, and timely transportation services in support of the operations of Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC). The position transports staff, supplies, documents, packages, and other authorized items to and from the Medical Centre and other approved locations.

The Driver is responsible for ensuring that assigned vehicles are maintained in a clean, safe, and roadworthy condition; completing required vehicle inspections and movement logs; promptly reporting mechanical defects, accidents, or damage; and operating all assigned vehicles in accordance with applicable traffic laws, hospital policies, and established safety requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance

• Conduct daily pre-operation checks of assigned vehicles, including oil, water/coolant, brake fluid, fuel, tires, lights, and other basic serviceability and safety checks.
• Accurately document all vehicle inspections and checks performed.
• Ensure assigned vehicles are maintained in a clean, sanitary, and presentable condition.
• Change tires on assigned vehicles when necessary and where safe to do so.
• Promptly report mechanical problems, defects, warning indicators, or other concerns affecting the safe operation of the vehicle to the Supervisor of Transportation.
• Promptly report any damage sustained by an assigned vehicle.
• Ensure vehicles are appropriately secured when parked and keys are handled in accordance with departmental procedures.
• Refrain from operating any vehicle considered unsafe or unroadworthy and immediately notify the Supervisor of Transportation.

Transportation of Staff

• Transport authorized staff members to and from assigned duties safely and within required timelines.
• Provide transportation to employees undertaking official duties at off-site locations.
• Coordinate with the Supervisor of Transportation regarding assigned routes, schedules, pickups, and other transportation requirements.
• Ensure passengers are transported safely and professionally.
• Exercise appropriate care, discretion, and judgement while transporting employees and other authorized passengers.

Transportation of Supplies and Other Items

• Transport and deliver authorized supplies, equipment, documents, packages, and other items as required.
• Assist with the collection and delivery of packages and materials required for the efficient operation of the Medical Centre.
• Undertake authorized errands and collections as directed by the Supervisor of Transportation or designated officer.
• Ensure transported items are appropriately secured and handled to prevent loss or damage.
• Obtain appropriate acknowledgement or documentation for deliveries and collections where required.

Driving and Road Safety

• Operate hospital vehicles safely and responsibly and in accordance with applicable road traffic laws and regulations.
• Exercise appropriate care and skill to prevent accidents, sudden stops, unsafe manoeuvres, or other actions that may endanger passengers, pedestrians, other motorists, hospital property, or the public.
• Observe posted speed limits and all other road safety requirements.
• Ensure seat belts are used in accordance with applicable requirements.
• Do not use mobile devices or engage in other distracting activities while operating a hospital vehicle.
• Immediately report accidents, collisions, traffic incidents, or other significant events occurring while operating an assigned vehicle.
• Cooperate with any authorized investigation relating to a vehicle accident or incident.

Vehicle Logs and Documentation

• Complete the required vehicle movement log for each journey to and from SLBMC or other assigned locations.
• Accurately record mileage, destinations, departure and return times, and other required information.
• Maintain accurate records of daily vehicle inspections.
• Record and report fuel requirements, mechanical concerns, damage, or other relevant vehicle information.
• Ensure all transportation documentation is completed accurately and submitted as required.

Customer Service and Professional Conduct

• Provide courteous and professional service to internal and external customers.
• Maintain a professional and respectful manner when interacting with staff, patients, visitors, suppliers, government agencies, and members of the public.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding information encountered during the performance of duties.
• Be properly attired, neatly groomed, and presentable while on duty.
• Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, accountability, and professionalism.
• Maintain appropriate conduct when representing SLBMC at external locations.

General Responsibilities

• Report for assigned shifts punctually and be prepared to commence duties at the scheduled time.

• Comply with SLBMC policies, procedures, occupational health and safety requirements, and departmental standards.
• Participate in mandatory organizational and departmental training.
• Report hazards, safety concerns, vehicle deficiencies, or operational issues promptly.
• Assist with transportation-related duties during emergencies or periods of increased operational demand.
• Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation or other designated officer.

Education, Competencies, and Work Experience

Education

• Minimum of a Secondary School Leaving Certificate or equivalent.
• Must be literate and numerate and able to understand written instructions, complete vehicle logs, and prepare basic records.

Licence and Experience

• Must possess a valid driver's licence appropriate for the class of vehicles assigned.
• Minimum of four (4) years' driving experience.
• Must be competent in operating both standard/manual and automatic transmission vehicles, including buses and pickup vehicles where assigned.
• Previous professional driving experience is desirable.
• Previous experience operating vehicles within a healthcare, government, transportation, or similar institutional environment is an asset.

Reporting Structure Relevant to Position

The Driver reports directly to the Supervisor of Transportation and works collaboratively with other Drivers, Transportation personnel, departments, and employees requiring authorized transportation services. The Driver is expected to promptly escalate vehicle defects, accidents, transportation delays, safety concerns, and other significant operational matters to the Supervisor of Transportation.

Working Conditions

• This is a shift-based position operating according to the transportation requirements of the Medical Centre.
• The Driver may be assigned to any of the following shifts:
• 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
• 3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
• 11:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.
• The position requires availability to work weekends, and public holidays based on the approved duty roster.
• May be required to work additional hours or adjusted shifts to meet operational requirements, emergencies, staff shortages, or special assignments.
• Requires prolonged periods of sitting and driving.
• Requires the ability to bend, reach, lift, carry, and handle packages and supplies associated with assigned duties.
• May require working in varying weather and road conditions.
